Done! Thanks for the heads up
There are ways to design secure prison facilities and procedures for highly dangerous offenders with minimal risk to others that don’t involve total social isolation.
Even Hannibal Lecter got to interact with other people on a regular basis. And even in that fictional scenario he only escaped because someone stopped following the established safety protocols.
We don’t “need” capital punishment for anyone, even the worst of the worst.
Yes, because they are assholes who think that the only way to organize a world is from the top-down, with the “right” people forcing the rest of us to do what they think is the “right” thing…
I hate this stupid, cruel timeline.
Because while we’re animals, we’re still DIFFERENT enough to need something different… Plus, how about we just… get rid of the death penalty, because it’s cruel and pointless. How about we instead try to work towards a humane system of justice that doesn’t need to use violence to organize society?
Jinx and yes! This isn’t a hard moral question. The death penalty does none of the things that its proponents argue for. It’s just cruel and far too often used on people who are provably innocent.
And those individuals are incredibly rare anyway… the VAST majority of people in prison (yes, even people who committed murders) are not some cartoonish evil-doers. I think it’s an incredibly naive way of looking at crime and its causes… it just doesn’t stack up to what the reality actually is…
Most people who have killed someone else are human beings who made a mistake. Are some people driven by some malicious intent? Of course, but do we need to build our entire justice system around that concept that’s just extreme edge cases? I’d guess that those are like a fraction of a percent of the literally millions of people currently in prisons right now in this country…
The BOP is going to have add a line to their experimental protocol, “Step 87. If the prisoner attempts to hold his breath, one of the attendants shall immediately step forward and tickle him in the prescribed manner. Tickling shall be no more than necessary to cause the prisoner to breath. Care should be taken such that the tickling does not induce a pleasurable sensation. Accompanying utterances (e.g., “gitchy goo”) are strictly prohibited.”
In addition to this story…
Here is another reason why the death penalty is wrong and fucked up, and needs to go.

It’s not just the death penalty that’s cruel, ineffective and spectacularly fucked up: the whole imprisonment-based criminal punishment system fails to deter, and fails to rehabilitate.
The Netherlands shows that there’s an alternative that genuinely rehabilitates people. Their incarceration rate is just 54 per 100,000; In the USA it’s almost ten times that at 531 per 100,000, according to Statista.
At 159 per 100,000 the UK isn’t exactly doing brilliantly either – we have the largest prison population in western Europe.
The criminal justice systems in both countries need completely dismantling and replacing with something that works, from police through to prisons.
