One of the greats

What’s interesting about his first album (the one containing all the songs everyone knows) is that the drum track is generally just a loop. They sampled their drummer and looped the relatively simple beat, which gave the rest of the instruments a little more room. It’s always stood out to me since these early songs are essentially a piano and a singer, with just enough other stuff to qualify as “rock songs”

I didn’t pay any attention to the lyrics at the time, but now they hit me like a punch to the gut.
