I think the unfortunate part of that is that they will continue to be gutted financially in this scheme, because they are no longer doing the whiz-bang-cool stuff, some private corporation is. Although the hard sciences get far more money than the humanities, people who do things like work at public universities and run labs are increasingly turning their work over the grad students and post docs, while they spend 99% of their time writing grants to get money. That’s what university scientists do now. As there is increasingly pressure to show some kind of profitability, NASA will have to continue to prove to everyone that it’s worth sinking public money into it.
