A_Deepness_In_the_Sky really turned me on to the idea of programming as a space-faring skill. The idea of software being passed down over centuries, accumulating capabilities in layers, really turned me on.
Which makes the title “SpaceApps” seem a little weird to me, as if the code generated in this program won’t be expected to run on desktop machines or laptops, only tablets or phones.
I guess I’m still itching to run the apollo software, the voyager code, maybe even see for myself the glitch that crashed Mars Climate Orbiter. But there’s no reason to expect that platforms of the future will be able to communicate with legacy craft that’s out there today. We can’t even read the old data from our own missions!
