The name Berann sounded familiar. In the 1960s, Marie Tharp created the first ocean floor map. She hired Berann, who was already noted for this style of thematic map, to paint the actual map based on her data. They are stylized with their exaggerated elevations, but for the first time a map gave a real sense of the ocean floor as a landscape, not as a dark abstraction.
