Neat demonstration of EDM cutting technology

I used to be a metal polisher/finisher and the most precise EDM jobs still needed to be sent to our shop for work. I don’t know the differences between this unit and what the machine and tool shops I’ve worked with are but when you’re making injection molds EDM-finish isn’t “finished”.

I think the two parts are from the same piece of metal.
According to this faq the “kerf” of a wire is about 120% of the wire and wires as thin as .004 (inches?) are common. that would result in a 12 micron kerf.

Question, if one wanted to buy an EDM cut metal piece, like in the video/gif is such a thing available? Out of curiosity i snooped around online and couldn’t really find anything.

I was hoping for cool interactive museum exhibits. www.edmstudio.com. (Yes, my company.

…right there with you.

He states in the video that the parts are from two different pieces of steel. Given the tolerance needed for slow gas release on a surface plate, I think it would be impossible for this to be from one piece of steel.

If you play it loud enough this song will cut that exact shape! I have seen! I believe!

That’s IDM, isn’t this a thread for EDM?

I was going for Juno Reactor first… my EDM -FU is weak!!!

In the end I went with that one because I really feel, deep down inside, it would totally cut that shape out of a block of metal.

i unnastan it can it cut through a safe

Really amazing - would be great if they’d shown the EDM in action.

Yeah, I was expecting using the power of some electronic band from Germany to cut through metal, much like we used the power of rock in the 80’s to blow cops out of a party with a single guitar chord.
