My wife and I have watched a lot of these documentaries, and I keep coming away with one main thought, and that is that it seems to be frighteningly easy to get a bunch of people to give you money for almost nothing in return. Like, if I was an amoral sociopath, I could be a cult leader.

They target very vulnerable and desperate people. Substance abuse rehabs and 12-step meetings are favourite hunting grounds for them.
