Are you gonna “cry if you want to?”
I’m not going to post the decision of the UN body that deals with arbitrary detention again. It stated he was arbitrarily detained in the Ecuadorian embassy.
If they don’t get some traction in the midterms, maybe:)
“You would cry too, if it happened to you…”
his own behaviour with women, and then running from a rape trial.
I guess I will cite a NYT story about the ruling:
It’s an appeal to authority, but the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is actually THE authority on the subject, so, for what it’s worth. They also say he’s owed compensation for his arbitrary detention.
The women who accused him of rape were owed a trial.
Your dedication to human rights doesn’t extend that far, I suppose.
My concern extends to the women and to Assange as well. I guess I assumed everyone saw the rights violations the way I did and the way the UN working group did. The unusual and unprofessional way the case was handled by the Swedish prosecutors effectively denied both Assange and his accusers justice. They can never have their complaints tried and he can never clear his name. I suspect that’s the ideal outcome for the US. Cui bono?
He ran, he ran, he ran, he ran.
Assange only had the opportunity to ask for asylum because his “house arrest” allowed him to wander London in the daylight hours. Some oppression. It was a curfew not detention.
He was given amazing leeway throughout, and he always characterized it as dramatic oppression.
He ran and ran, and it’s silly to blame Sweden for his own actions.
The main point is that Assange guaranteed an injustice to others in the present, because he said there was a possible chance of injustice to himself at some unknowable point down the line, of purely speculative severity.
Cui bono?
Assange’s paranoia and self-interest, over women he admitted to abusing in his earliest interviews with prosecutors.
Just because you like his comedy, doesn’t mean that Cosby was set up.
Not everyone:
Of course, Assange thinks that The Guardian is part of a Jewish conspiracy against him;
This is why I didn’t want to open this can of worms. He stayed, he stayed, he stayed in Sweden when the charges were first offered and then withdrawn. After they were withdrawn, he left for the UK, the US put pressure on Sweden and thus we have history as it unfolded: the charges were reinstated and he was caught in the trap.
I look forward to a third act from Assange that will be every bit as provocative and enlightening as was his first act. We know that he had made arrangements for a Russian escape plan that made him very beholden to them and their interests. I suspect that Snowden’s safety, whom he helped escape the US, has been held over his head uncomfortably, too. An Assange free of Russian entanglements and his confinement in asylum could be a great force for openness and good around the world. I just want him to survive this unjust incarceration and be given a chance to redeem some of his disappointing actions.
I don’t hold him above criticism. I just think he deserves the rights each human is endowed with.
The charges were reinstated because the women kept pushing for them.
That’s the point.
Opinion is divided on the subject:
I fear in this thread, I’m Captain Rum:)

This situation is complex and isn’t black-and-white.
An asshole and bigot ran an organization that did both important and notorious deeds.
It was then alleged that aside from being an asshole and a bigot, he was in fact possibly a rapist as well.
Untangling that issue puts him in potential harm’s way for the deeds of his org.
It’s a shitty situation for everyone around, and claiming either that “He deserves his fate because he’s an asshole bigoted possible rapist” or “he deserves a pass on being an asshole bigoted possible rapist because of his works” doesn’t do justice to the complexity of the situation.
Then, spend years essentially trapped in one place because of the above. As I said, shitty.
Victims deserve justice, and the world needs a service like Wikileaks. Hopefully both can happen, in spite of an asshole bigoted possible rapist’s actions.
