a pair of Nikes in the shop window in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I can honestly believe that some fuckwit advertising/brand management wanker would do this, given a chance. Even though Nike’s didn’t exist then.

What next, Fidelity Investments adverts in Pride and Prejudice? MetLife Insurance adverts in Pirates of the Caribbean? Amazon adverts in Stagecoach?

In Orwell’s 1984 the protagonist Winston works in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth where he burns out of date truth and amends the records to reflect the current truth.

It’s not a good thing to do.

One of my favourite things about old movies is that you get a slightly idealised snapshot of that era and all the ephemera that belong to it. North by Northwest is probably the foremost example of this design porn, but any James Bond movie works too. It’s as close as you can get to time travel.

So yeah, fuck this.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy watching shows like Adam 12, Rockford Files, and other similar shows. They shot a lot of those in city streets at the time and it is a snapshot of the 70s.

They’ve tried this in videogames for years, inserting billboards for current things and people have always revolted. Would imagine people would have a much stronger response to this bs in movies.

This reminds me of Demolition Man where they changed Taco Bell to Pizza Hut and the change is super obvious and annoying

The fact that this exists is further proof of why we can’t have nice things.

I can understand why this would be desirable to corporate since, with the lurch to streaming, commercials are going the way of the dodo. And I can see where, going forward, certain TV shows or movies might be designed specifically to accommodate it in at least the short term, like the 10-20 years a new show might be hosted or rerun. But to retroactively overwrite set design in TV or film past a certain age with modern, out-of-era ads would be jarring and visually ruinous.

I can imagine attempts to make this more palatable by inserting products and diegetic ads that are period appropriate (which actually strikes me as even more insidious).

All advertising is pollution.

If we started treating it like the toxic waste it is, the world would be a better place.

Visually ruinous and useless. I very much doubt anyone will rush out to buy a product 'cause they saw it in a gerrymandered copy of “Casablanca”. So they are doing this just on the very very off chance of earning a cent or two somewhere, with a danger in addition: that people will take note of said products and start actively boycotting them.
I already came across a couple of journalists suggesting just that, and it would make for a juicy revenge indeed.
