As a transportation nerd, I can happily state that he got hit by the Chicago bound Empire Builder (Amtrak). One MUST always look both ways, not once, not twice, but three times when crossing unprotected rail grade crossings.

Wow, the fact that there are no lights, or bells, or anything, for a train coming at that speed is terrifying. The grade crossings out here are exceptionally well-signalled.

… and process what you expect to see (and hear!). The image of an oncoming train doesn’t change much in the few seconds you pause to look.
How much time does one need to comfortably clear a crossing? Lets say 12 seconds total. An 80 mph train is 1,408 feet away at that point in time.
Imagine the stress the train engineers endure as they fly through these crossings.
