This may not be what you’re asking, but the list of valid guesses is different from the list of valid solutions. You can guess AURUM and PLOTZ and VIAND, but they’ll never be the answer.

It was already political.
I’m not sure that’s fair. I think a more generous, and more likely, interpretation is that they want to avoid the average liberal puzzle-solver – who is taking a short break from the news and the world – having to be snapped back to the pain and fear associated with the recent abortion-related news.

I was thinking along those lines too. “Pain and fear” are stronger words than i would use (and i don’t think I’d use “liberal” either), but the puzzle is supposed to be fun, a break from the news.
