Also the same sort of logic that comes up around GG Allin stans. It’s ‘transgressive’, but does it say anything of merit beyond huffing more of the same sick we’re swimming in?
Fred Rogers was more transgressive by giving children free puppet shows; he actually threatened something of substance.
Yeah, I much preferred the women-penned fantasy novels to which my next-door neighbor hipped me. Even the rarely mediocre ones (she has pretty good taste) went down more easily than anything of bukakski’s I’ve tried. I truly gave his work an honest shot, then made an excellent shot when I threw it across the room into my wastebasket.
Mr Cave is also hardly the pinnacle of humanity, but his book King Ink kicks chuckles’ ass into a wastebasket.
I have never had the option of not viewing the world through the eyes of a damaged individual, for one thing. And just listening to my own opinion is “transgressive.”
I was spoon fed bukowski in university as what good writing and thinking looked like and I resent it.
Charles bukowski’s art was never “transgressive” from what I can tell, instead it is the song of the status quo, the utimate in patriarchal self-indulgence.
It is damned refreshing to hear some one take the piss out of fucking bukowski. But to hear nick cave do it is glorious.
I guess i lucked out in the sense that i’ve never read Bukowski and barely know who he is beyond that one Modest Mouse song. I just got the sense that i wouldn’t give a shit about whatever he was all about and i’m glad i was accidentally right.
I’ve read enough to see him as a man who was all about himself, an arrogant, self-pitying person who mostly just whined in his writings about how the world wasn’t good enough to appreciate a drunken, chainsmoking, abusive sage like himself.
Ironically, my literary porn name is Charles Bukake.
And, thanks, Nick, but The Laughing Heart was more significant to me that anything you wrote.
your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.
