There was a video shared on BB a while ago of an interview with Bardem, and he talked quite extensively about how outstanding a job the actor playing the store clerk did at making this scene just work. I think he said it was the first scene they were shooting with his character, he wasn’t particularly confident in his English, etc., and the actor playing the store clerk just really helped to carry the day.
