Although it isn’t exactly the same thing as “hipsters” are today, the original “hipsters” (or “hepsters”) were white Jazz fans who adopted various African-American terms and clothing styles in order to associate themselves with the musicians they admired, not unlike what would happen generations later with white rap fans.
