NRA president Ollie North partially blames school shootings on Ritalin

“It’s heavy metal music”
“It’s rap music”
“It’s pornography”
“It’s those comic books”
“It’s the marijuana”
“It’s rock ‘n’ roll”
“It’s miniskirts”
“It’s [insert anything that wasn’t available or socially acceptable before 1950]”

He kind of has a point, our culture’s hero worship of “the good guy with a gun” is certainly part of the problem. He neglected to mention that he is the living embodiment of our cultural of violence, though: someone that has promoted solving every problem by shooting at it and thinks that makes him a hero

Compelling new research from the NRA shows that guns play almost no part in school shootings whatsoever. “When you look at the factors that contribute to lethal school shootings, the ready availability of high-tech devices built specifically for murdering people is practically irrelevant," insisted Samuel J. Browning, NRA chief investigator. “It’s a detail, a distraction. Our figures show conclusively that the really important factors lie elsewhere: Ritalin, trenchcoats, opaque backpacks, videogames, rap music, sneakers, you name it. Your typical high-schooler is a walking time-bomb, hopped up on ADHD meds and progressive leftist politics. Sooner or later, he’s going to blow. Some trivial little thing, like some teasing teen hussy who won’t put out, and BOOM! And when he snaps, when he turns into an uncontrollable murder machine, it doesn’t matter if he has a gun or not. He’ll carve his way through a score of his classmates with nothing more than a Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox if he has to.”

Asked if he thought that politicians should try to control some of these other factors instead of focusing on guns, Dr. Browning was definitive. “Absolutely,” he told reporters. “Today, in America, a troubled teen can walk right into TJ Maxx or J.C. Penney’s and buy a trenchcoat, right off the rack. Belted, six- or eight-button, light or heavy weight, in a range of colors. Anything he wants. And no one does anything about it. It’s incredible, frankly. It’s like there’s no political will to address the problem at all.”

Dr. Browning also shared some recent NRA findings on school security. “The core problem is doors. Also windows. Our schools are wide-open. Potential killers can just walk in through any of these gaping holes in the security fabric. So we’ve come up with a new model. Basically, we need to surround schools with high-security kill-zones full of razor wire entanglements, patrolled by rapid-response units of heavily armed and armored school safety officers. Kids will approach the school building only on their knees, with their hands visible at all times. I don’t need to tell you what happens if they fail to comply. Then, when they reach the building, instead of just walking in through some … door … they’ll squeeze through a narrow entrance, like a kind of big mail slot. That gives access to the screening area, where you have the magnetometers, the millimeter-wave radar, and the sniffer dogs. If they clear that, they’ll go through an enhanced patdown, and a 10-question security interview before being allowed to proceed to their individual lesson pods.”

To reporters who questioned whether these measures were really appropriate, Dr. Browning had only one thing to say. “These are the lives of our children, we’re talking about. There is no measure too extreme, no step we will not take, to protect them. Except for restricting the sale or ownership of guns in any way, shape or form, of course. That’s completely out of the question.”

I would think that it consists of middle class and above parents trying to get better academic performance and behavior out of their kids, so… pretty powerful?

the disease is youngsters who are steeped in a culture of violence

He’s approaching making sense, but he takes a sharp left turn. One almost thinks it was coincidence.

But OK, sure, let’s address the culture of violence. Maybe the organization that used to stand for gun safety could say that shooting people is bad?

Or, you know. Taking action on literally fucking anything. They like to point out alternate solutions which don’t involve gun regulation, but they don’t actually take any action on those things. Not a one. And I do think some of the ideas they’ve periodically paid lip service to would help.

Hey -if there’s one guy who knows about the relationship between drugs & gun violence it’s a guy who worked with cocaine traffickers to sell guns to terrorists.

I like the part where he talks about metal detectors at every entrance, basically admitting that keeping guns out of a place makes it safer. Now just extrapolate that solution to an entire country. “But then only criminals will have guns!” Perfect, that is way better than what we have now. Criminals are fairly predictable in their motivations, mostly money and power. And they tend to work their way up to really bad stuff, giving the authorities time to catch them before they do irreversible harm. Unlike the right-wing nut with no criminal record who is supposedly perfectly normal one minute and murdering children the next. Very few of even the most hardened criminals would even consider murdering children for no reason, and if they did a gun would likely not be their weapon of choice anyway. Only cops and criminals should have guns. On second though, no. Just criminals. Problem solved.

Not very powerful. Folks with ADHD have to put up with all sorts of shit, from drug gatekeeping to improper diagnosis to people spouting bullshit that doesn’t work to oh-so-helpfully cure us of our ADHD. It’s frustrating and infuriating.

Shit like what this fucking douchecanoe does further pushes ADHD into invisibility and makes more people think it’s fake or that ADHD is overdiagnosed (it’s not) or that it has no research behind it (it’s one of the most researched mental disorders). Fuckheads just need to let us alone.

stronger evidence that Ritalin and other medications that are used to treat ADHD would reduce violence and aggressive behavior.

Cue NRA calls for all US schoolkids to be dosed with ritalin as a condition of entry.

North was tried in 1988. He was indicted on 16 felony counts, and on May 4, 1989, he was initially convicted of three: accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and ordering the destruction of documents through his secretary, Fawn Hall. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gerhard Gesell on July 5, 1989 to a three-year suspended prison term, two years probation, $150,000 in fines, and 1,200 hours of community service. North performed some of his community service within Potomac Gardens, a public housing project in southeast Washington, DC.[29] However, on July 20, 1990, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU),[30] North’s convictions were vacated, after the appeals court found that witnesses in his trial might have been impermissibly affected by his immunized congressional testimony.[31]

from wikipedia

This makes me wonder if he worked with Stan Laurel:
“North solicited $10,000,000 from the Sultan of Brunei, to skirt U.S. prohibitions on funding the Contras. However, he gave the wrong number of the Swiss bank account intended to launder the money, and it went instead to a Swiss businessman”

There is a thought amoung the right-wing that with Ritalin and such ADHD drugs, society is drugging the manliness out of our boys.

I guess this is a step up from blaming fluorinated water.

No, it’s not. This class of drugs does not alter the personality, merely reduces the signal to noise ratio in the brain making it easier to focus.
