The source of the problem isn’t journalists…it’s lobbyists and the people/organizations who fund them.

of the study, I don’t know for sure if the authors have an agenda, but
there is a lot of convincing data there, and it is pretty well

I stand by what I wrote. There are shining exceptions like Ben Goldacre and Phil Plait, but the revelations about what went on in the News of the World show that the old saying is true:
You cannot hope to bribe or twist
(Thank God) the British journalist.
But seeing what the chap will do
Unbribed, there’s no occasion to.
You only have to look at how both the Mail and Private Eye pursued an anti-vaccination agenda, or how just last week the BBC reported that “Russia” was bombing the moderate opposition in Syria whereas there were reports that a hospital had been bombed in Afghanistan and, only in the small print, did you discover than American jets had been seen in the area, to see the sort of thing I mean.
That’s ludicrous a foolish statement more likely heard on FAUX NEWS or an anti-vaxxer blog.
EDIT: Made w/respect to @nemomeno’s comments.
No need to repeal it, just stop misinterpreting it…
Obama has already issued a direct executive order to close Guantanamo Bay. Much of it has been blocked repeatedly by Congress. It’s also why he can’t just dismiss things like the TSA or NSA; he’s not a dictator.
And your comment reflects the miserable state of the gun nut’s soul.
And even if we do imply causation, it could go either way. Either poverty begets gun violence, or guns are making us poor…either way…
Thanks, that was indeed instructive. Evidently things have improved an awful lot. I can only assume the numbers for the 80s were not fit to print…
“. . . in gun control, the constitution is pretty clearly on the side of gun owners.” This is simply not the case. In United States v. Miller the court ruled that the government can regulate fire arms, and argued specifically that any gun ownership had to be justified by its potential use in a militia. It wasn’t until 2008 in a 5 to 4 decision that the Supreme Court ruled that the constitution gave an individual the right to bear arms.
Really?
I’ve seen at least 5 reports and 4 video editorials from the BBC about the Kunduz bombing. In fact they have just posted a new editorial on it 24mins ago -
This is a search so you can see them all - http://www.bbc.co.uk/search?q=kunduz
In the state of Washington (and about 17-18 other states), gun deaths are higher than road fatalities. Which include total accidental deaths, suicides and vehicular manslaughter (just so I’m not accused of conflating statistics). In other words, we kill ourselves or each other with guns more than we do with cars in my state.
I’m so proud…
They have reported it now, but at the last time I looked they were still trying to avoid pointing the finger at the US/NATO.
Let’s say they were. If you include troops killed in battle that we know about, the number is nearly seven thousand Americans killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then you have the three thousand killed in WTC. Add another hundred or so in terms of small terrorist attacks, such as the Tsarnaev brothers and the like.
Still doesn’t come close to how many people murdered (let’s ignore the suicides, too, why not?) by firearms in the last two decades.
Iraq had nothing to do with terrorists though so even those numbers aren’t right. It isn’t “terrorism” when people are fighting an occupying force. It is war.
Because it is the basis of our nation, not the divine right of kings. The only basis for the USA is our Constitution.
I was merely attempting to bring the numbers regarding terrorism up. I don’t believe that the Iraq war was fought over terrorism, just that terrorism was the excuse they concocted to push us into it.
I thought the excuse was WMDs?
