Obama moots mandatory voting

Doesn’t he know that democracy is so important that it should be only exercised by the elite? I guess not, he is a Muslim who hates Amerika.

yeah, but over all a minority group is benefited by a non-mandatory low-turnout election.
Assuming that the minority groups can muster up the voters then their group would be better represented then the majority who don’t bother voting.

It’s why conservatives are so afraid of Mexicans getting citizenship and voting.

Well unfortunately those people are idiots anyway. >.> Jury duty isn’t only tied to voter registration rolls. Anyone who pays taxes or has a drivers licence can be called to jury duty. Maybe its best they don’t vote if they don’t know that much in the first place.

If anything, people who don’t care to vote are easier to buy. Also, if all candidates are thugs and rackets (which is certainly not unheard of), forcing someone to vote is a pretty totalitarian thing. I definitely want the right not to vote!

While I think it would be great to get more people to vote, I don’t believe that mandatory voting is the solution it appears to be. I think a better solution would be making it a federal holiday to vote, and more early voting/more voting by mail. We should make it as easy to vote as possible, and find ways to get around the bottleneck. There is absolutely no reason people should have to wait hours to vote, or not be able to vote before the polls close. Of course there is also the matter of gerrymandering, its an issue we have to address at some point. After all people aren’t likely to vote, if the districts are knowingly drawn in favor of suppressing their vote to begin with. >.>

it is the american way. Incentivize the change.

Obamacare does not mandate health insurance. It taxes you, and then removes that tax once you have insurance. It’s an awful conservative approach for such a radical liberal.

Potential jurors are chosen from a jury pool generated by random selection of citizens’ names from lists of registered voters, or combined lists of voters and people with drivers licenses, in the judicial district."

I like to be careful about using words such as “idiots”. Which is why I will refrain from using it with reference to your post.

Nice use of moot.

I don’t think that’s going to stop just because of compulsory voting, they’ll just be able to fill their pockets from the fines (justified because it’s not a tax) and increase prison labour.

I’m sure they’ll only see that as a bonus.

However I would like to see what would happen if anarchisty types in the USA formed something like the SPGB, complete with policies like abolishing federal and state governments in favour of bottom-up socialism and direct democracy.

That or the OMRLP.

Yeah, voting is mandatory in Brazil and all that happens is that people end up voting for joke candidates. I’m not sure why some people don’t vote in the US, but better research is needed on why it happens. Even if this seems like a good solution, it could well backfire.

One step away from forcing people to vote from the Official Slate.

IE: People who think they could get out of jury duty by not registering to vote are wrong. Not to mention some courts use other methods as well, it varies but in the end my point stands. So yes, if such people didn’t know that much they probably shouldn’t be voting since they seem to lack a basic understanding of how the government works even on that level.

That being said I do support uncoupling jury duty from the voting rolls. More Americans have drivers licenses than are registered to vote anyway.

It’s depressing cause it’s true.

A lot of people in Ferguson didn’t vote. A lot of people in Ferguson were imprisoned for not paying fines.

The states have a sovereign right to oppress their peoples in any way they so choose, as long as it is not specifically forbidden by the US Constitution.

I’ve never seen “moot” used as a verb before. Something has been learned today!

Canada Revenue lets you automatically register to vote when you file your taxes (it’s opt-in, though, not opt-out). A great system, IMO, and once you’re registered to vote, they just send you a voter card a few weeks before every election. That’s all you need to vote when you show up at the polling station, no other ID required.

You forgot wealthy. Only white male wealthy land owners should be allowed/required to vote. Or do you actually believe some guy in West Virginia who owns a trailer on a half acre of land should get the same privilege as a Texas rancher with 500 acres to his name?
