Odd Stuff (Part 1)

More like a feature that added itself over time (the systems were state-of-the-art when they were commissioned)…
FTA:
The report notes that the Air Force favors the Series/1 machine for SACCS in part because the ancient machine cannot be accessed with conventional network protocols, adding extra layers of security to the program.

But hey, IoT with nukes, what could possibly go wrong?

this twitter thread is crazy:

Every hour, another loop, until only one runner is left standing. That’s all there is to the Big’s Backyard Ultra put on by Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell.

Starting at 6:40 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, runners set off on the 4.166667 mile Big Trail on Laz’s property in Bell Buckle, Tennessee. To continue, runners had to complete a single loop within 60 minutes and be ready to go before the clock started for the ensuing hour-long loop. This continued until only one runner had the will to go on.

This is potentially game changing. Now if they could come up with something like this for fire blight, there would be dancing in the streets! (Well, maybe not, but you get the picture.]

Don’t know about “odd” but not sure where else to put this… the Japanese Emperor was enthroned today. Banzai!

Couple of notes… First… is it just me or is the guy holding the umbrella for Duterte have a rather large head?

Second, apparently, there were tiny crowds for this event…?

Last… were the only dignitaries invited right wingers or royalty? That seems weird.

Apple chief Tim Cook ascends to top of tech pantheon on Chinese biz school’s advisory board

Other members of the board, according to the university website, include Michael Dell, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM, along with chief executives of JPMorgan, BP, Citigroup, BlackRock.
To be fair, this list may need updating seeing as it also includes Carlos Ghosn, who is still described as CEO of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi – a position he lost shortly after his arrest in 2018 for alleged financial offences.
The board also includes a number of senior Chinese political figures and political bureau members.
