The best Citroƫn H vans driving around are those selling pommes frites, preferably offering a wide selection (12+) of frittesauces.

2nd best: the one Phantomas uses.

I love that artistry expression still is automatically interpreted as religious props by archaeologists. Imagine how they look back at us in 10k years talking about the rich pantheon of Avengers and the sermon material provided by Wizards of the Coast… oh what a simple folk we were.

Speaking of ancient artifacts, this 4,500 thousand year old sculpture is blowing me away:

Wow.

I have to admit that I don’t follow celebrity stuff closely, and was never a fan of Spears’ music. But this seems really really weird to me. I don’t understand conservatorships, but from what I’ve read regarding this case, it seems like she’s getting hosed by the courts and her father.

Wiser people here could explain?

(Wish I could link to a good explanation of Spears’ situation, but all I can do for now is vent.)

Here’s some background articles on her specific situation. There are multiple links in each article. I agree it sounds weird, and stands as a frightening example of how women can still be controlled under systems run by men in ways that haven’t changed for centuries:

She had some very public mental health challenges and was put under conservatorship for that… it still stands and she can’t even control her own reproductive health…

I’m sure you’re familiar with the scholarship in US history on women and these sorts of legal means to control their lives and wealth. This really does seem like it could come straight out of the late 19th century… claim a woman is insane, put her away, and take her shit… or if she’s poor or a woman of color, just sterilize her. Which of course lasted well into the 20th century…

It’s fucked. Not a fan either, but this is just fucked.

And in this case she’s a rich white woman. And yet . . .

Not to deny the amount of control that goes on, but even by those standards, the continuing conservatorship is very strange.

Great stuff, thanks!

Children are chattel to their parents, women are chattel to men, so of course the father of a wealthy young woman gets to control her (and her money) forever.

He’s paying himself twice what he allows her to have for a budget. That tells you all you need to know.

Oh yeah, and the not allowing her to take the IUD out of her body so that she can try to get pregnant. Which the anti-choice people completely support, so it really isn’t about the sanctity of life after all, is it?
