I remember seeing small doors in the backs of houses in a small town in the north of Italy (can’t remember the name), it turned out they were a municipal requirement for firefighter access and were frequently the minimum size required. They also had a small gap at the bottom to release flooding.

Yup, I have very cosmopolitan ancestors - they were born in Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Germany, perhaps even France (don’t know for certain if any of my direct ancestors were born in the latter half of 1812), all the while living in the same few villages generation to generation.
