On the difficulty of patenting (or otherwise protecting) magic tricks

“In the field of magic, theft is rampant. Close-up magic wholesalers steal from close-up magic wholesalers. Parlor manipulators steal from parlor manipulators. Large-scale illusionists steal from large-scale illusionists. Why do they do it? Because they can.” —Rick Lax at Wired.com. READ THE REST

“Trick of the Trade” is a pretty interesting look into the community of French magicians, and he talks a lot about the norms of trick-sharing and trick-stealing. They handle it by shunning stealers, so they can’t learn about new tricks in the future. But that probably breaks down for big-name magicians and/or in the age of YouTube.
