Ongoing coronavirus happenings

I wonder if you are joking when saying strangely.

Politicians should STFU about experimental treatments with a mixed scientific record at the best of times, and this is not the best of times at all.

In general, it would be unheard of for a chancellor.
Even for a minister of health, noone in their right mind would even accept a comment on some preliminary results of an experimental treatment which does not by all indications have a strong effect on the outcome of a Covid-19 infection, if any. This would cause a political crisis, and the minister would quite probably lose their job very quickly.

I wonder if you are joking when saying strangely.

Most definitely. Probably should have added a /s tag.

Mostly trying to highlight the inexplicable disparity, at least inexplicable in terms of national talent pool, that we seem to be seeing in national leadership these days.

On the whole (and Iā€™ve said this before) as much as I do cut our politicians and health care system a bit of slack in situations like this, there are limits.

It doesnā€™t take a master at anagrams to find the evil in that guyā€™s Twitter handle.

Fox News is getting sued for peddling lies, and the free speech wingnuts are coming out of the woodwork. Notable speech absolutist Eric Goldman says heā€™s sad that thousands of Americans will die thanks to Fox Newsā€™ coverage, and that ā€œHistorians will harshly condemn Fox Newsā€™ irresponsibility and gaslighting on COVID-19 (and many other subjects).ā€, as if a sternly-written article or chapter in a history book will satisfy the people whoā€™ve lost loved ones to the pandemic or cause Fox News to lose all of its advertisers. Mike Masnick and the gaggle of commenters at Techdirt essentially spout the same shit.

Is there a word that exists that I can use to refer to people who defend the First Amendment to the same self-destructive ferocity as musketfuckers defend the Second? Because if there isnā€™t, Iā€™d like to coin the term: Parchmentfuckers.

Fox News has killed countless people in the past, is killing countless people with what itā€™s said and not said about COVID-19, and will kill countless people in the future. It will never face consequences of any real sort unless we toss aside the idiotic notion that Fox Newsā€™ lies deserve to be protected under free speech. The parchmentfuckers insist that the farcical Marketplace Of Ideas will protect us, that all that needs to happen is for ā€œmore, better speechā€ to be offered up as a counter. As if all thatā€™s needed is for a bunch of people on Twitter and various talk-show hosts to say ā€œNo, thatā€™s actually wrongā€ and people will wizen up. Because thatā€™s been working amazingly over the last few years, amirite?

I said a bit back that the people responsible for the death and suffering this pandemic wreaks need to be held responsible, brought to justice, and otherwise serve as . The parchmentfuckers can side with Fox if they want, but I and many others will never forgive them for doing so.

Iā€™m not sure that this is about free speech- no one is stopping them from saying anything.

Itā€™s about civil liability for their actions. If a Dr told you to drink arsenic- they could be sued as well. Thereā€™s no government restraint involved.

They can still continue to say what they want & put people at risk - but their insurance company may decline to continue their policy.

The infamous pharma bro with the Worldā€™s Most Punchable Faceā„¢ is now trying to convince the world that we need to let him out of prison so he can get to work on inventing a cure for coronavirus. (For the record: Shkreliā€™s talents lie in preventing people from getting access to lifesaving medications, not in developing them.)

Heā€™s a drug patent grifter - not a scientist.

But if he feels he can make a contribution in that area - Iā€™m fine with him being permitted to have access to a high school chemistry set in the vocational training program.

Hospitals working at the limit can always use an extra pair of hands to help with the bedpans and stuff.

Heck, Iā€™m even willing to let him have as many samples of virus-infected bodily fluids as he needs as long as heā€™s sufficiently isolated from the rest of the prison.

Could you and your smells please social distance themselves to another room?

(Just kidding. I know jokes can come across wrong these days. :slightly_smiling_face: )

Thatā€™s actually not a great example, because

  1. It has since been overturned.
    And
  2. That ruling was comparing advocating against the draft with yelling fire in a crowded theater.
