Is an explanation necessary? I don’t even see the withdrawn posts, but the graph speaks for itself. I swear, the biggest weakness of hu-mans is their instistence on narratives over facts. It will literally be the death of us.
The way I see it is that the biggest strength that humans have is their ability to collaborate, an ability that is coordinated through social efforts driven by narratives that motivate and organize people around efforts. Without that we die because we’re almost all literally useless individually.
I’m a scientist by training, and part of my current profession is science. From experience, I can tell both of you that even in science, facts without a narrative rarely exist, and almost never are communicated.
The problem is that the story must never, ever, ever get into the way of the facts. Interpreting facts is the most important work of scientists. We are trained to be careful about it. Most people are not, and are ditching all caution when re-iterating scientific communication.
The graphs are important. The numbers are going up. We are working together to get them down. And we won’t let anyone tell us the problem is over, we should get back to “normal”, because we stand together in this against people who spin narratives which are dangerous, false, idiotic and sometimes maybe even criminal.
We need to.
And we need to see reality.
Now, as a scientist, I need to remind you:
when looking at graphs be aware that even the graph itself is not the fact. It is a representation. A story. Whoever makes a graph tried to show us something chosen out of a variety of options to display it. We interpret it. You interpret it.
And then you choose what you take out of it, and you assume what the author of the graph (or the poster) wanted to tell you.
That a hell lot of interpretation and assumptions.
So, be excellent to each other. You know. Be like
No offense but why is it me you feel the need to remind? Because honestly … Like why? Is it something about me or just random choice of target for person who needs to be told by you how to think and how to feel about what they think?
I think one of the things that’s most infuriating (aside from feeling helpless) is other folks trying to dictate how any of us “should” be coping with all this craziness.
For me, looking at ‘scary-huge numbers of doom’ constantly doesn’t help in any way, shape or form; it just needlessly exacerbates the stress I’m already under, regardless even if the info therein is 100% perfectly accurate…
Right? I don’t even mind graphs but I’m personally more interested in local numbers because those affect me. If checking a graph each day helps some people to cope with their relative position in this crisis then I’m not telling them they can’t. But for those of us trying to manage the anxiety by not obsessively clocking distant aggregate data that has no immediate tangible effect on the outcome of this pandemic on our individual lives, I just hope some people find the compassion to consider that this is not some kind of infantile inability to accept facts. That is a borderline offensive assumption imo.

Necessity varies among humans and each have weird weaknesses- some even feel the he need to comment on posts they haven’t read. Weird weakness that.

Well, yes. That’s how insurance is supposed to work, after all.
Not in my experience. For me it’s a government mandated tax on owning a car or house that goes to gamblers in financial services. YMMV.
I don’t think they were required to have pandemic insurance- that’s fairly unusual coverage.
My mileage does vary. Considerable.
Since the SARS outbreak.
Wimbledon is a prepper?
Really bad news for sports leagues and venues

The notion that insurance works very differently for the likes of them is not one that surprises me.
Then again the state of the irish insurance industry would shock most people I think. It’s a dreadful state supported cartel of scammers.
At the time, someone probably did the financial math of a possible cancellation, and said “Bloody hell!” I assume that many glasses of sherry are now being raised in that person’s name. (At Wimbledon. More serious stuff at the insurance company that now has to make good on that bet.)
