It apparently came from a mistranslation of the Spanish “asesina-ballenas”, and so should really be “whale-killer” instead of “killer whale”.

Personally I very much doubt anyone who thought about it for five seconds, let alone a scientist in a relevant field, would be confused about an intelligent, social, predatory species finding a toy to play with and not valuing the well being of animals outside its group.
If nothing else, have the met humans? We still have people who think that either non-humans don’t “really” feel pain, or that it somehow doesn’t count when they do!
