Cool! Looks a lot like the home disco light panels they sold in early 80s Sears catalogs, only larger and modernized.
You could probably go even simpler and just use the cheap RGB LED that just cycle between colours, BigClive style. The entire panel will start red, but the individual pixels will go out of sync after a bit, and it will just appear to pulsate randomly.
