Even leaving aside the treason and slavery, why would you name a bunch of forts after a group of dudes whose most memorable collective military legacy was “getting their asses kicked on their home turf?”
I imagine they’ll have to change email addresses, stationary, all sorts of stuff. But it has to be done.
Tangential Burn:
A “mob” from the perspective of people in power who are making these changes. “Quick, rename things and maybe they’ll go home.” I’m not in that cohort.
It’s not clear who is considering protesters a mob from your comment, just FYI.
The easiest honoree to build a consensus around would be Sara Lee, because nobody doesn’t like her.
It was clear from context to me, but I can see how it can be read the other way, so I guess I was just making an assumption about the perspective
In this case you were indeed correct… There have been plenty of people who have used “mob” or “lynch mob” unironically to refer to protesters or people upset about things online.
So… actually one of the best?
They are. Change comes in many small steps. The original Civil Rights movement didn’t happen overnight, it was a couple decades plus of fighting for reform. Sure a name change has little direct affect. But it is a cumulative effect that these people are no longer to be considered “heroes”.
If you have ever worked for a big company or the government, you will soon realize it takes a LONG time to get anything significant done.
Remember those “hover scooter” chair ads? They were basically a Medicare scam and it took like 3 years after they figured it out to close up those loop holes.
I confess, while I do recognize I think 3 of those as bases, I only recognize 3 different ones as Confederate Generals. It seems odd to rename so many based after traitors. I assume most of those are in the south who were admired for their “military leadership”.
Rommel was a great leader and strategist as well. We would never name a base after him.
I know how red tape works, i was being facetious. 3 years for me seems like a reasonable timeframe though i’m sure its entirely possible to make the changes in less time but people’s job priorities are likely focused on other things. It is what it is, as long as the glorification of confederate symbols and figures is axed.
Let’s not forget Camp Burgoyne and the Yamamoto Naval Base.
I’m gonna have to relearn a bunch of running cadences
their home is Ft. Benn Georgia,
The land that god forgot
The mud is 18 inches deep
The sun is blazing hot
Airbo…ooo…oooo…ooorne
I confess, while I do recognizance i think 3 of those as bases, I only recognize 3 different ones as Confederate Generals.
Yeah, I noticed that. Fort Bragg in particular is claimed to be the largest military base by population in the entire world, by any nation, but until now I had no idea who it was named after (as Stephen_Hess points out, a particularly incompetent traitor even among incompetent traitors, and one at least to Northerners like me, suitably obscure).
Others have already alluded to it. It’s small, cosmetic changes in the hopes of appeasing the rightfully pissed off citizens of this country. It in no way signals their interest in actual systemic change, the type that is sorely needed.
But, I also agree that big changes often start with small steps. The fact that two weeks of protests bent them this far this fast is pretty amazing. Removing the visible signs of racism is one step in the long, always upward battle of removing all traces of it. One less vector for indoctrination is a good thing.
Fight on though. It’s only the start. I’ve waited fifty three years to see America rise up against the tide of our conservative drift, and while it’s scary, it’s also absolutely amazing.
Sooo, what racist dickhead will the bases be named after? Because of course they’ll be named after racist dickheads.
Could go with the USMC & Navy approach, and just name the base after the nearest town I suppose.
They could officially “rename” Ft. Lee after singer Peggy Lee. That way, they could claim a song totally appropriate for Ft. Lee:
“Is that all there is… is that all there is, my friend…”
I’ve read that His Orangeness is a fan of that song, which spoils it for me a bit. As far I as know, he hasn’t spoken about “Johnny Guitar”, another great Peggy Lee song (more recently popularized by its use in the Fallout games). Also, the 1954 Western featuring Joan Crawford that the song is the theme to is pretty good.
We’re going to end up with a lot of Fort Trumps aren’t we?
I think you would have had to actually serve in the military, unlike President Bone-spurs.
I don’t let that worry me; he’s also said he’s a big fan of the bible… as if he’s even cracked one open.
