I know that Francis is in many respects a nicer guy than many past popes, but he’s being one heck of a hypocrite here. Why isn’t he having kids himself if it’s selfish not to? And why isn’t he actively working to end the celibacy requirement for priests, as only he can?
Agreed. Not only that but also a decreased expectation of sex. Kids may no longer feel pressured into proving how “grown” they are by having sex before they’re ready. (A result of good parenting and sex education.) There’s also the recognition and increasing acceptance of ace (and gray ace) individuals, resulting in partnerships that have little to no sex.
The picture in this article is not one incredibly bow-legged person lying missionary style on top of another incredibly bow-legged person.
In the article text, they mentioned that it was a majority behavior among college-aged youth, which speaks to a ubiquity beyond headlines.
I wonder if the decrease in sex-having is indicative of us finally having reached a level of societal maturity around sex, to the point where it’s just another thing you can do, rather than a taboo life-destroying activity pilloried by prudes, or a liberating magical essential part of human experience championed by sex-positive allosexuals. At this point, it’s just a fun thing you can do with someone else, and it doesn’t necessarily trump other fun or pleasant things to do, like getting a good night’s sleep, or experiencing art (which includes Netflix and video games), or making and eating a nice meal or whatever.
One thing to consider with just about every “sex” study that garners headlines is that the sampling size is typically very small, usually skews young and almost always is self reported.
Not saying there’s not value in these conclusions but I always take these headlines with a huge grain of salt.
Is whatever the opposite of an aphrodisiac is.
