People lose their minds when it comes to tribalistic activities like sports, but this is 100% about money. Fantasy used to be just local betting pools, but now sports book betting allows all sorts of gambling on things you would never dream of. Mid-game parlays, fantasy season-record bets, you name it they will be more than happy to take your money. It has also deeply impacted sports writing and criticism as so much of the focus has come down to officiating because people lose so much money on blown (or correct, but “controversial” calls that were never remotely controversial).
I’ve said it before and it appears that a few legislators are starting to take this seriously, but we are in the midst of a nascent national crisis and it is completely SCOTUS’ (and Chris Christie’s) fault.
Some hope on the horizon, but it takes a cursory search to find that thousands of lives have been destroyed by this shit. In the meantime there are loads of celebrity millionaires happy to help destroy your life.
Lax gambling laws and regulation are a scourge, the perfect late-stage capitalist grift.
I can dream of a lot, although it’s more like a nightmare
From the other football, in 2017:
A British newspaper’s betting company, which sponsored Sutton United for the game, had 8-1 odds that Shaw would eat a meat pie during the match.
(the newspaper was the S*n, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch along with Sky Sports)
Legalized sports betting is going to fuck over A LOT of people.
I’m sure Kevin Hart and the others hawking it will sleep just fine at night.
It’s also going to end a lot of careers. There have already been a number of pro-level players busted for gambling. I actually remember when it was legalized a few people saying that Pete Rose should be exonerated.
It even has “Fantasy” right in the name!
And what is a non-athlete wearing a professional sports jersey if not a person engaging in cosplay?
If you’re going to roll-play (I know what I said) football, you may as well do it properly.
Gambling ads need to be banned from stadiums, race cars, uniforms…
