It’s just a few thousand bad apples.
Mine got abandoned like 3 blocks from my house… They called me at like 2am and I had to go walk over and get it. On the plus side nothing was taken from the trunk.
I had my car stolen once, but it was a tidy theft. (Unknown to me, there had been a news program on how easy it was to steal Dodge Neons, showing the steps in a nice how-to. Gee, thanks…)
A police car flashed them less than a block from the apartment, and they bailed and ran.
So I got a call at 3am: “This is the Toronto Police. Did you lend your car to anyone this evening?” “!!! No…” I walked over, picked the car up and drove it back. Bought a “club” the next day.
Now that’s the way it should go.
Something similar happened to me about 15 years ago. My RX7 was stolen from my driveway, apparently found a week later with just a wheel missing and assorted items inside, like a beach chair. It was towed to an impound lot, where it sat for a month, and I never knew about it until I got a letter from that lot saying I owed them $550 for storage and they were going to auction it if I didn’t pick it up soon. Since I had reported it stolen, the sheriffs had all my information but never got in touch with me, and lied when I asked them about it. Nothing I could do except pay the money if I wanted my car back. Couldn’t afford it, but had to do it because I needed it for commuting.
Then that car caught fire a few months later, though I’m pretty sure these are unrelated incidents.
That’s a depressing thought. Totally plausible, but depressing.
Well, I don’t think Mary & Clyde were robbing banks… or were they…
That reminds me -
Lately I had been super lazy about bringing in my paintball gear from the weekend, and the guns, tanks, tools, etc I usually left in the trunk.
For some reason the weekend before I brought them in. Thank god. I had over two grand worth of shit in there (new), and at least one gun that would have been irreplaceable sentimentally to me.
You and @TobinL had all the luck.
Man, I thought yesterday I got my car stolen again. I mean, I was like 100% sure it was gone. Parked to get gas, went in with the kiddo to get something to eat. I took longer than usual and came out and my heart sank. I was like - what? I left my work computer in there as well. I was stunned and in disbelief as I know I locked it. But then I figured out I was one bay over and a big truck was blocking my view. Whew - wow. I have not had that much of a relief since a much needed period arrived.
However, I am really proud of the man Bobby Briggs has grown to become. Definitely a major candidate for bully cop as a teen.
Note: I’ve only seen up to ep. 10, so if things go south for him don’t tell me.
Sad end of the story: you still own a Dodge Neon.
I’d agree that it’s likely a case of bureaucratic ineptitude, but it’s not a small town by most any measure. CO Springs has several hundred thousand folks within its jurisdiction.
Oh… Wankel rotary engine?
Corrupt PD. CORRUPT AS HELL PD. Case closed.
“…waived the fee…” looks to me like they tried to portray this as doing these people a favor rather than obeying what seems to be clearly written law.
This used to be why we had City Council people, they were supposed to watch out for the residents but it seems you can’t get a government to obey its own rules now unless you get it exposed on TV or elsewhere.
I’d sure like to see the person who decided to charge them even when it was shown this was not legal explain themselves. Simply saying “oops, we goofed” seems to be enough to cover any bureaucrat’s rump up to and through executing innocent people.
Indeed it was!
