Pope: I don't support homophobic civic layabout Kim Davis

That account is entirely based on a press release from Davis’ people, and the article you’re commenting on strongly suggests that it was made up.

Exactly. He doesn’t care enough about these little local fights to give a fuck. “Who? Yeah, it seems she was on the list. I don’t recall her, though. Next, please!”

His whole attitude has been that sure, same sex marriage is a sin, but going after it is akin to putting all of your energy into fighting jaywalking and never investigating murders and burglaries.

As far as why Benedict retired, well, it was because he was looking forward to retiring before he became pope. He took up the job mainly because of the sense of duty that he had nurtured in himself up to then, and once he felt that duty was fulfilled he decided to perform one last duty and ensure a smooth transition.

This is basically distilled from reports in the German press, where he gave some candid interviews after his retirement, as well as tidbits his brother let drop.

Damn your entirely plausible explanation!

I’ve heard that he wanted a nice quiet job in the vatican libraries, which is the kind of thing that can be interpreted in all sorts of ways, especailly among those who don’t understand the pleasures of research.

It was a dog whistle to the reactionaries, whether within the U.S. Catholic establishment or our politics in general. The pontiff was fully aware she was invited and who she was. Do people thing that he’s a dotty old man just handing out rosaries like candy? He and his team know exactly who he was meeting at the embassy and why.

Of course they did. It was the vatican embassy, and he’s the head of state of the vatican. Embassies when their head of states are on site don’t just let anyone in.

He knows exactly who she was and what she was doing and what she stood for. The only thing incorrect about Kim’s story is her embellishing of it, odds are he didn’t vocally endorse her or anything as she indicates. But he definitely knew who she was and why she was there.

I derped and didn’t spellcheck.

To err is human. To forget to spellcheck is idiocy.

We prefer badly spelled jokes and grammatically poor snark to perfectly formed serious responses.

Laughter is a perfectly valid response when dealing with the political drek that keeps tumbling down on everyone’s heads.

Been waiting for an excuse to drop that in here.

Who am I to question your line of work, but are you sure that’s the kind of job you’re looking for?

I always got the notion that Americans liked him because he was a staunch cold warrior, not necessarily that he was progressive… maybe I’m mis-remembering that, though?

Also, has history vindicated Sinead on this pope yet? Because I think it has:
