Reminds me of jokes about local news promos warning about some vague danger “lurking in your home” that turns out to be a common cleaning product (or dihydrogen monoxide).

Ladybirds

To give you a sense of the density…they’re all over the trail head. Apparently these are the one you buy in gardening stores. People but them, release them in their gardens, and they immediately fly off to the top of the mountain: probably closer to their native climate.

The larvae are a better bet anyway, since they can’t fly away had have bigger appetites. There’s also a fly larva famous for liking aphids.

Gopher? Unperturbed by me just feet (0.305-0.61m) away.

After three weeks of giving our three cats antibiotics twice a day, Luna has almost forgiven me. I’m on thin ice obviously.
Luna on my lap.

Edited for brevity.

A little toad, hiding in a pallet at the garden center

ETA: probably a green frog, not a toad.

Isn’t there a rule of thumb like, “frogs wet, toads dry”?

Kind of like the one I snapped upthread.

I’m glad they’re not due this year in northern Illinois (but I’ll be getting them in 2024). When you walk outside when they’re active, you can hardly hear yourself think. They make the usual summer cicadas seem quiet by comparison.

Why do I feel like I have ridden one of those?

Speaking of riding animals which should not be ridden, I knew a guy who wintered in Antarctica with the Navy. He said the only thing to do to amuse one’s self was getting drunk and trying to ride seals. Seals did not take too kindly to that.

Ducks in the back yard. They eat the seed that falls off the feeder then go for a dip in the mixing trough. I had intended to pick up the mess to build a new shed but once the ducks started using the trough the missus wouldnt let me break up their routine. I’ve also had to add a ramp to make it easier for them to hop in.

Sometime this year I’ll get my shed built.

I bet! I’m guessing they got bitten quite a lot. I once swam a bit too close to a sea lion harem and had a huge bull dart right up to my face, inches from the mask, with his mouth wide open showing massive fangs and then dart away. Message was received loud and clear.

I think more emphasis should have been put on “try” to ride the seals. My guess is they ran away before anything could happen. Never got the full details there while I was working with the guy.
