Pretty sure that is unclear. It used to be that unbaptised babies within the faith and all of the just souls born before the coming of Christ went to limbo, but when they got rid of limbo it was very specific that they were talking about the souls of unbaptised babies within the faith and the just who died before the coming of Christ gaining access to the process of purgatory and eventually heaven.
Almost everyone within in the church except the most saintly goes to through purgatory before going to heaven - it is the final stage where you purify (or purge) your soul of all remaining attachment to sin (for example, you might repent the sins you committed, but still acknowledge the pleasure you experienced from commiting the sin).
Baptism is the washing away of original sin. I am pretty sure that you can’t get into heaven with the stain of original sin and purgatory is a process that inevitably prepares the souls of the elect for heaven, so pretty sure the only remaining option is hell.
Either that or I may have misread my 1st edition Monster Manual
ETA: If that is not correct and ANYONE can get into heaven, then the Catholics would be no better than the Mormons baptising lists of random dead people into their faith posthumously
I once asked a Christian type person how someone from a part of the world where they’ve never seen a Bible so there is no way they could accept Jesus Christ as their savior, how can they get into heaven?
Their response was basically, too bad so sad.
So in their mind God actually punishes people for not being aware of the get into Heaven rules. They said there is no excuse for anyone to never have read a Bible.
I believe God’s forehead is pretty worn down from all the face palming he’s been doing.
A symbol can be a pars pro toto. That’s the whole point of a symbol, it doesn’t have to be the real thing, it only needs to represent it. I don’t see a problem there.
