Plural possessive: prisoners’ headstones.

Can delete this when fixed.

Makes me think of a freeze-frame bonus gag at the end of the Mel Brooks movie The Producers: the protagonists are in prison, running their con again by creating a new “sure-flop” play, and there’s a poster on the wall advertising it, with everybody involved using their prisoner number instead of their names.

Frankly I’m kinda surprised that they bothered to spend the money to give them headstones in the first place if they weren’t going to personalize them.

By way of comparison, every year L.A. County has a mass funeral for about 1600 or so unclaimed dead, whose remains are cremated and put in a mass grave with a simple marker that just has the year and nothing else.

“I know not whether laws be right.
Or whether laws be wrong;
All that we know who lie in gaol
Is that the wall is strong;
And that each day is like year,
A year whose days are long”
