Puppy dies on flight after United Airlines forces owner to stuff it in overhead bin

Forced in the sense that they can threaten to have you arrested for failing to follow their orders…

I don’t feel like quarreling, but I object to ‘mansplaining’. I didn’t know your gender and I didn’t care about it.

My first instinct when I hear this kind of thing is just to write the person off. I have about as much sympathy as when people tell me they are allergic to radio signals.

However… the human body does produce very strong responses to babies crying. It’s a kind of evolutionary advantage to the baby’s survival.
And so I googled it and found a bunch of different things to read. This article from CBS cites a study that says women who have migraines are more likely to have a baby with colic but here’s the twist: evidence seems to suggest that the cause and effect might be reversed. Could it be that this person’s migraines are so bad that they actually make babies cry?

Maybe it’s true. I admit that I’m maybe overly annoyed by having been in the opposite position (my baby crying on a train and people making a big scene about it) recently.

But still, If you know you are susceptible to sound-induced headaches, buy better earplugs. I have a pair which more or less stops you from hearing anything for just these situations.

Those are the sort of migraines which actually might be visible :smiling_imp:

p.s. all Joking aside, I can imagine this actually being the case. Was hungover a few weeks ago, and the baby cried a lot more, probably because his parents were slow and grumpy.

If you object to mansplaining, please don’t make it your first assumption that you know better than me the situation I was in. Don’t start off assuming that I don’t know how to take care of myself, and also don’t take the comment I posted and twist it around to blame my condition on me. My point there was to show that United is not training its cabin crews properly, not to have to dig into every little detail about my flight and exactly every little mechanism of what led up to the situation. Starting off assuming I arrived on a plane with no sound damping devices, and especially the tone you took in the way you wrote it made you come off as a real jerk. And, yes, I’m going to get mad at you just jumping in assuming I can’t take care of myself.

You… just crushed… their… life force!

I had some people get annoyed with my son once for “being loud” in a restaurant. The thing is, he was just having a normal conversation with us but people love to trot out the scales of justice every time they even perceive a baby acting up, let alone having to deal with the inconveniences of actual human behavior that children present.

So I’m probably over sensitive to it too. It reminds me of something I read once (maybe even on BB) that talked about how most of the time, when people get annoyed at other’s talking loudly on cellphones, the person is speaking normally. But what the brain has a problem with is only being able to hear one side of a conversation. It’s a major distraction for our modern brains that just aren’t used to the idea.

The news reports I read on the incident stated that he’d suffocated in the overhead bin (possibly by being in a bag without adequate vents).

Yeah, while the overhead bins aren’t airtight, there is no airflow at all in them. CO2 will quickly build up in the small space.

But that is completely different, people talking on cellphones on the bus/train/plane are super annoying and should be taken out and shot! :grinning:

I must admit I am one of those people who gets overly annoyed ad cell phone (half-)conversations. So much for credibility from my side :sunglasses:

Yeah, no. Most flights I’ve been on these days I’ve seen at least one person board with a pet carrier and there has never been a problem. People need to fly with animals all the time for various reasons; sometimes you just can’t avoid it. Tomorrow, in fact, I have to bring a dog across country (not on United, of course) and there’s no way I can really do that right now besides flying.

Do this people actually think what the fuck they are making people do and what it means to reject their commands? The poor thing died a horrible death due to them and their inmediate reaction is to return them $125 for their troubles?

United as a group of people need to be made to pay a whole lot more for this. Like, a whole lot fucking more.

Right? I mean… not to sound cold but that won’t even cover the cost of a new dog…

I was thinking more like going RICO on them fuckers and dissolving the company on account of their many, many, MANY many failures at basic people-ing. But hey, paying the actual cash cold-bloodedly killing a dog by oxygen deprivation in front of a bunch of random people and then forcing everyone to travel with some else’s dog corpse could cost would be a nice start.

I hope UA gets sued with extreme punitive damages. I would go insane if that happened to me.

I cannot fathom the emotions this family is going through. I’m not sure if my reaction would be a reasonable one, i’m afraid i would be more than livid.

Hey, you can’t make an omelet without killing a few puppies, and jet engines run on omelets, as any child knows, except the kid whose puppy had to be sacrificed for the greater good.

Some things never change.

Just want to say BEFORE we all do the dance… That if we are going to have time warps, can they at least be of happy stories?

Ok, now…on with the dance…

EDIT: come on @jlw now this post doesn’t make sense
