Same story for altar boys (at least in my parochial school) and right around at the same age, with sufficient access thereby to the workings of the inner sanctum accelerating the complete shift from God, something that my brother and I (both of us were altar boys) never clearly and categorically revealed to our parents until later (although they may very well have suspected). In my 20’s I got the opportunity on one of my visits to break the news to my mom while she and I had a mother/son lunch in a Chinese restaurant. We were discussing my maternal grandparents and family history when, quite shyly, she told me that my grandfather was angry with her when she decided to send me and my two siblings to Catholic school. She confirmed his atheism by quoting him: “Jesus is like Tarzan!”. I’ll bet no one else has ever uttered that in a Chinese restaurant.
