Someone (Nick Mullen?) made the case that Maher got started at a time when “edgy” stand-up comedy was suddenly in demand as cheap content for cable TV, but there were only like 6 people doing it. So Bill Maher kind of fell backwards into a career even though, at his peak, he’d have struggled to book a 5-minute open-mic slot in Poughkeepsie in 2023.
Obviously there is money in what he’s peddling, but the myth is that this is some Bill Hicks or George Carlin act, when in truth he was always just a misfiled Rush Limbaugh, only self-identified liberals and centrists don’t like to admit they’re into that.

Yeah, not quite, but FWIW, I can see the parallel. The former two were funny in smart ways, often while taking shots at TPTB. Maher has a schtick that to many SEEMS smart and funny (while often pointlessly edgy), and I think a lot of people have fallen for it.

Well sure, some of them. Not every fan likes him for the same reasons. And those politics aren’t as obviously heinous to a lot of people as they are to the politically aware.
I think he has a Doctorate in Philosophy and is very well read!

Most importantly, he does cartoon voices.
And does a very good job playing very bad people. I have to wonder if he ever encountered any white supremacist fans of his character in Sons of Anarchy who didn’t realize he hates their guts in real life.

I would like to second… third… whatever going to see Rollins do Spoken Word if you can. He’s absolutely amazing, I’ve seen him three times and always come out energised and motivated.
