Also, by putting expulsion downstream of conviction, Raskin’s statement is essentially saying that the standard of proof for expulsion is higher than “beyond reasonable.” And because the vote to expel is still not guaranteed to succeed (and therefore some serious crimes would not lead to expulsion), it’s essentially saying that the standard of conduct for members of Congress is lower than that needed to be convicted of a serious crime.

Exactly. There’s nothing wrong with holding Congress to a higher standard of behavior than the law requires.

It’s a common strategy to allow your opponents to keep the most incompetent player in their team, if you have any say in it. I say these 31 are quite clever.
