Glad It was just an effigy…
Yes, better to wait until they get to the book burning part to pay attention… then we can move the goal posts again to give them yet more slack… /s
They might have been empty boxes, but one of them said this…
Eigel Statement on Accusations of “Book Burning”
ST.CHARLES, MO – In a video that is being widely circulated of me at the St. Charles County Freedom Fest, I am taking a flamethrower to cardboard boxes representing what I am going to do to the leftist policies and RINO corruption of the Jess City swamp.
But let’s be clear, you bring those woke, pornographic books to Missouri schools to try to brainwash our kids, and I’ll burn those too – on the front lawn of the governor’s mansion.
As trans people are facing genocide throughout the country, it’s good to know there are people looking out to make sure fascists are treated fairly /s
Is “We’re pretending to burn books” really much better than “we’re burning books”? Is the former not “bad stuff”? Serious questions to you.
I ask because no-one is making anything up. Hasan himself states the facts in the video. So you seem to buy the claim of organisers of the flamethrower event that the difference between figuratively and literally burning books (their words, from the video) is a line that they would never actually cross (although they also state their intention to the contrary).
Fascists are not owed the benefit of the doubt, especially when they themselves leave no room for doubt.
So you’re taking issue with the way events were reported but you completely disregard the question of whether there’s any harm caused by threats. Because even if there weren’t any actual books burned this time the threats are very real.
So what is it, just sparkling literary vandalism?
That’s a bit like pointing out that the guy who brought us today’s mass shooting really used an AR-15-style rifle and not, as reported, an actual AR-15.
But maybe you should take up your point directly with the publisher of boingboing.
no, because they made their intentions as clear as possible. aside from that, I guess it was just cheaper with boxes. thats not even meant sarcastic…actually, I bet thats the only reason they burnt boxes instead of books.
I suspect some of them are also scared of books, as objects.
It’s worth noting for those unaware that the most famous image of Nazi book burning (below) shows them incinerating the library of Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute of Sexology. We know how that turned out for the LGBTQ community that organisation supported.
Like someone hitting a wall to demonstrate how gladly they’ll do the same to you.
No books burned, but, “Golly gee, we’d sure love to burn some soon!” ain’t the cover they think.
…and every last stinking one of them moves their lips as they read.
Also, the words can’t be more than two syllables or they are troubled.
It’s not better at all. In this day and age, physical books are, generally speaking, not a scarce resource. It’s the symbolism and the intentions behind the act that matter far more here. In other words, there is absolutely no difference. They’re villainous and vile, and must be stopped. Because otherwise, they will eventually be burning people, just as Heine said.
There are more than 30,000 books in this house. {ETA: Yes, I actually counted them around 1998, -9.} Guess that means I’ve oppressed a metric fucktonne of know-nothings.
That sight is far more sacred to me than even the most gorgeousest cathedral.
I absolutely promise you those threats are seriously harming those of us in the Illinois library system. (Yes, I know you know that, just wanted to get that statement on record for those that can’t make the connection.) Our staff are on edge and we haven’t even been a target yet. Some of our neighboring libraries have been threatened multiple times in a single week. Some of the staff in those libraries are starting to discuss service cuts to make themselves less vulnerable, which will reduce what they offer the community.
Waiting around for the Republicans to actually advance to burning books is like standing around waiting for the idiot waving a loaded rifle because he hasn’t actually shot anyone yet. Odd that this should be the analogy that occurs to me.
