All applicants to become a lawyer must pass the Bar Association exam in Californiaā€¦ the failure rate on that exam is upwards of 50% on the first attempt. I have a friend who has a business teaching wanna-be lawyers how to pass the bar examā€¦ She makes a comfortable living at it.

For example, Abe Lincoln never had a degree of any kind but practiced law after basically memorizing Blackstoneā€™s Commentary of the Laws of England, which despite the name was basically the standard law textbook in the 19th century US.
