If anyone who can’t afford a Tesla wants this experience, I’d suggest going to Florida and driving with an anxious septuagenarian grandma who’s in a rush to make the Early Bird Special.

Also, I’d hate to drive in a town where they allow these tests.

It’s doing it all wrong right from the get go. It need to be further forward so that the turn will end up being sharper. Then when it decides to go - fucking go, don’t creep around the corner.

Not looking forward to the “future” :-(.

Unprotected left turn is one of the most challenging maneuvers for any driver, human or bot. The human has a bit more at stake, however.

I know he’s braking to prevent the autopilot from initiating the turn, but I’m also a little weirded out by the fact that no one on the road has opted in to these “tests”. Granted, he’s doing it for demonstration, but how many autopilot tests are run without anyone on the road knowing?

I’d have liked to see him take his hands properly off the wheel. He just needs to hover a foot over the brake pedal for this test.

But yeah, not going to be using this and will regard all Teslas I see as being driven by the mythical (or is it?)

…just to be on the safe side.

Am I unreasonably angry at this guy sitting there, blocking an active lane of traffic on a public street, to perform his “experiment” with dozens of unaware drivers on the road?

In the future, all cars will have transponders so they can see and communicate with each other, and subtlety slow and speed up to allow everyone to seamlessly go where they need to. I predict in my life time they won’t even allow any manual control on highways.

I don’t want any part of that dystopian nightmare.

  1. AI control is far less advanced than the current gen of AI snakeoil salesmen claim.

  2. Car communication: Centralized control of the software or decentralized? Centralized gives authorities the ability to take arbitrary control of traffic, e.g. prevent people from attending protests. Decentralized control is a hacker’s playground and leads to people modifying code enforcing safety regulations. Neither is good.

  3. I’m sure there is a three.

I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to commit.

If the Tesla “autopilot” left turns into oncoming cars, how well does it see motorcycles, scooters, bicycles, etc?

About as well as humans do, which is to say, not very well…

There were moves to work in that direction under the Obama administration, but under Trump half of the dedicated spectrum was sold off and Toyota cancelled their work in that space. FCC Modernizes 5.9 GHz Band to Improve Wi-Fi and Automotive Safety | Federal Communications Commission

Or pickups pulling boat trailers for that matter? This way too close to be to an oncoming combination traveling at highway speed.

Good point. The whole time I was watching this, I’m thinking If anyone causes an accident due to their using some kind of autopilot in their car, and I or my family is involved, I’m going to be… angry.

About halfway through, when it held back on a decent gap and started edging forwards when the traffic started again, I decided that the Tesla had decided to kill its occupant.
