Cannon fodder – yes – but, given the age range (perhaps not a coincidence) and now the sight of those “how-can-they-expect-us-to-fight” barracks, the conscription is looking more like a way of getting the most likely (and enthusiastic) troublemakers off the streets, thereby siphoning the fuel out of the inevitable mass urban rioting.
Putin is either shielded from this info by his inner circle, or he is growing more desperate by the day. No wonder he’s murdering his oligarchs at such a fast clip lately.

Or out of the country. The men showing up for duty are poor and uneducated guys from the rural areas and the periphery – they have no options and wouldn’t have protested anyhow. The people who are most dangerous to Putin’s regime – young, educated middle-class men from the big cities with resources – have already fled and won’t come back as long as Putin is in charge.
This has all been a reminder that fascists don’t care about brain drains. They’d rather set their country back decades than risk people with critical thinking skills questioning their authority.
