Seinfeld vs. Stewart on whether Woke/P.C. has ruined comedy

No, am a human.

No one is owed laughs. Fundamentally all comedy is a negotiation with your audience, they are your customers and if they don’t find you funny, you just suck at the job.

But more than that it just isn’t true, you can say more now than you could at the height of his popularity. Take It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the show is still popular and pushes further into controversial territory than Seinfeld ever did. The big change is that our media flows both ways right now and he has to hear from people when his jokes bomb. He could still do the same jokes, but they stopped being fresh and interesting, in part because he did them. He wants the money of a major platform, without needing to do the work to win over an audience, and the praise for being cutting edge without doing the work to keep up with social conditions. Society moves and almost all comedy ages like fine milk. It is an art that by its nature is dated. It plays on the edge of cutural mores and expectations. Nothing says a show is going to be dull as quickly as the performer complaining that the audience is in the wrong for not liking it.

There’s a few of us. I fall towards the older end of Millennial, but firmly within all definitions based on birth year.

To be fair, the TV show theme was instrumental.

This is a huge factor in the current whining by comedians. Used to be they could only be heckled by audience members who dared heckle in person, and it was a smaller crowd. Now anyone can heckle or critique, and folks like Seinfeld have a hard time with it.
Add to that the slightly greater diversity in writers’ rooms and among network execs, people who might call out bad ideas, and these entitled comics melt down.

Funnier than anything Seinfeld has said in eons. :joy:

I don’t think his comedy segments were meant to be unfunny. That was just his natural genius for unfunniness.

And his straight character was in part because the others were the real actors.
