2017 is the year of Linux on the desktop, anyway.
That’s what I hear. VirtualBox is one of the apps coming over. Can I count that as “on desktop”? (I really would love to kick Windows to the curb, but I have to test on it, and then there’s PhotoShop …)
The nagging should stop now actually as it isn’t free anymore.
7 is a lot nicer than Vista. 10 is actually quite nice too.
On my to-do list is to read closely fooCount1’s article in this quarter’s 2600 to see if that’s exactly true.
Penfriendship is magnificent elevation to the spirit. Do give it a try!
This beauty landed in my mailbox this morning.
Timeframe: end of 2016:
[ ] lose 20 pounds (my original goal in January, but “I’ve only got 30 to go”, so I’m resetting)
[ ] write a “close-but-not-quite” generator in JS for NaNoGenMo (November) [using the Levenshtein distance of sentences; a similar project was done last yer, but clunky in multiple languages]
[ ] earn $500 from freelance work
[ ] Welcome new babby (Dec 1)
Other goals are vague and ill-defined. #3 up above was added as a stretch goal. Hrm…
Could you do the old boot from flash drive, if you just want a play?
If you disable the update it stops putting up the nagging message.
Work/School Deadlines
Meet all three current billable contract obligations by their respective deadlines.
Be ready for dissertation review in early September.
Be ready to schedule dissertation defense in the Spring.
Personal Projects
Finish my sigil ring by end of August.
Finish restoring vintage picture frames for my mirror laser art by early September (waiting for the humidity to lift so the wood finish can dry without having to run my shop fans 24/7).
Finish my signet ring by mid September (this is the negative image of the sigil ring, for actual wax seals).
Finish the new wine-rack plinth by early October.
Finish engraving the coffee table I made by late October.
Finish restoring antique dresser for a friend by December.
Finish restoring the tragically poorly maintained Kawasaki Vulcan 750 I inherited last summer by next Spring.
Expect another soon! Hopefully by the weekend!
If you’re paying attention and learn life lessons well, even a step backward can later prove to be a step forward.
Timeframe: 1 week
[] Wrassle a couple of stupid applications logs into submission using logstash and grok filters
One is a commercial application which shall remain nameless. The other:
What’s that? Standard date formatting? Who cares! We’ll make up our own!
Log lines 50,000 characters long? Why not!
Every job has its own UUID? Great! The important actions don’t include it in the log? FUCK YOU!
Write every action type to a different log? Check!
Each thread has its own log? Sure, who the hell cares at this point!
Infer that something has gone horribly horribly wrong only if we DON’T write an error to the log? Why didn’t anybody think of this before?
This is going to be a tough week.
2 months:
[] Lose 5 Kilos.
[] Learn how to play 3 songs a week, I only need one more this week.
There are two things I loathe I had to deal with today:
- Time
- Encoding
Anyone that hasnt experienced the pain of those two, thank your lucky stars.
If we’re keeping track, I’m down one surprise front door visit.
I can’t fly to your door to punch you in the face…sorry 'bout that*.
But I can provide some excellent modern classical music (I advise not thinking too hard about that descriptor)…
*Alas, I’ll bet we’d have made a super fun fight club.
I ain’t leaving my place just to smack you. Sorry.
Well if you knew when it was coming…
S’ok, if past practice is any indicator of future performance - I wouldn’t be getting off the couch to answer it anys
