Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue caught lying about Trump's “shithole countries” remark

Yes, ignoring such things is so much more “helpful.”

Now just where is that Good American Liberal rug??

I think you might be missing the point discussing the word, and the actual political and social situation in other countries than the US.

This fuckup is about racism. The notion that people are not qualified to immigrate due to their country of origin, or worse their cultural or biological heritage is nothing but racists. And contrary to all European, and also most other countries in the world, the US perceive themselve as a national founded on immigration. Immigration is important in US folklore, from Ms. Liberty’s famous plaque to Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming Governator. Immigration and the stories from dishwasher to millionaire seem baked into the American Pie.

Racism also never was so openly expressed by the president in the last, say, 100 years, I would think.

The two things together - racism and breaking with the idea of the US as an equal opportunity immigration nation - are what causes this media mess.

But don’t forget it’s just another example how not to get on with DACA.

I would add to this that the WH explanation of this remark does not improve it. “His remark was not implying that white immigrants should be favored, only that he had spoken with the Norwegian PM who had mentioned how hard working her people were.” So it’s not about how white they are, it is that they are hard working as opposed to the lazy darkies from the ****hole/house countries. Much less racist that way! /s

This is a truth we have forgotten, thanks to the liars who claim politicians lie all the time.

Most politicians do not want to lie, they hate being forced to lie, as lying is dangerous ground. They will avoid, they will use diplomatic* terms, but with the exception of Trump and his lickspittles, they will not outright lie.

I’ll offer “shithouse blues,” which I’ve used to describe cleaning out a cat litter box, but haven’t used in the context of ironing out immigration policy.

Am I the 48 millionth person to ask why such establishments think they’re doing us a favor by providing a TV and leaving it on?

“I really didn’t want to get the brakes fixed today, but hey, Judge Judy’s on!”

I know someone used to sell a fob that would turn off most any TV in the vicinity.

Why doesn’t anyone remember that Trump called the White House a shithole/house as well?

No, actually it’s “credulous”. Which is even more irony. : )

Definition of credulous
1 : ready to believe especially on slight or uncertain evidence

Example: “Few people are credulous enough to believe such nonsense.”

It’s neither, at least for me. The problem is the full statement and what it shows about how Trump really thinks. The vulgarity, while lowering to the office of the President, is really less important.

The problem is Trump saying people shouldn’t be allowed in the US because they come from a poor country. Not from any other criteria - solely because their country of origin is a place Trump doesn’t like because the country is poor.

That’s cruel and irrational. It’s literally insulting immigrants because the country they come from is poor.

It puts Trump in direct opposition to the US’ core values, and our entire history of allowing immigrants in because we believe in people, and we don’t think people’s poor origins should be held against them. It’s in direct opposition to the actual words on the Statue of Liberty.

It’s also irrational, because it is immigrants from poor countries who have actually helped build our country and make it great.

That’s the real problem for me, and I think many others.

But let’s not forget that when he compares them to Norway, and in the context of other aspects of his general approach to other countries, the implication also becomes racist.

I absolutely agree, I think that’s very clear.

I’m just concentrating on the surface meanings of the words themselves, because the words are harder to deny. And insulting to almost all immigrants and their descendants, regardless of race.

Trump’s fetish for Eastern Europe is well known.

It’s not about poverty or corruption. He’s just a racist.

I genuinely think Trump’s baffled by the concept of being labeled a racist; the belief that Eastern European predominantly-white nations are inherently better than predominantly-black nations of Africa is one that he’s lived with his entire life as just a fact of life installed by his father, and his father’s father. It’s a simple fact that the man’s a racist, but it’s such a deep part of him that it’s impossible for him to see it.

Why not all 3?

His actions at least are classist, corrupt and racist. And that’s still leaving a lot out.

Yep, and as basically implied by mainstream American culture in general as well.

Absolutely, yes. I’m certain that vast swaths of rural (and, well, urban) Americans would be shocked at the suggestion that they’re racist, even as they vote for Trump, nod their heads as he calls Mexicans lazy rapists, and say things over drinks like, “Now, I’m not racist or anything, but I dunno why we need an all-black Marvel movie, right?”

Well, I have some good news for them

So looking forward to that movie. And Martin Freeman is such perfect casting for that supporting role. As is Andy Serkis, brilliantly introduced as a villainous scumbag in “Age of Ultron”.
