I suppose it wouldn’t really work if the miners didn’t somewhat care about the canary; the thing with boring tank-based pets you don’t care about is that it can take quite a long time to notice when they’re dead, which in this case would be a problem

I wondered which came first - the realization that replacing a canary was a pain, or the caring that developed from having the same canary around for a while. Also, given the function of the canary, I’d be inclined to keep a real close eye on it, whether I cared about it or not!

Canaries are kind of noisy, being songbirds.
