Hermes, Greek god of “the runs”.
Also a Psychopomp. Going via a sewer to Hades must be a shortcut.
“Who’d throw away a perfectly good head” - Gahan Wilson cartoon
Link is bad and attribution is wrong. It may be in the style of Alcamenes, but if the date is correct, then Alcamenes would have been dead for a century or so when it was carved.
This is embarrassing for an art major to admit, but how do they know that’s Hermes? Could it not be some other god?
Hermes is the name of a courier/home delivery service here in the UK that has a reputation of not delivering/loosing items so maybe they were responsible for this ending up in the sewer
Damn, I’d hate to be the Athenian that crapped that one out!
He’s a whiz!
Or just some bearded dude?
“Wait here, I have to go use the head.”
“Hermes is an Olympic deity who served as herald of the gods, and could swiftly move between the mortal world and the divine aided by his winged sandals”
He must have got a flat to wind up in a sewer…
Because EPMHΣ was carved on the back of it. LOL
