I assume that they were detained so that they can be given an award for excessive awesom-nitude!

I remember seeing the RAFFEYSOD modification and having to read about it in the Los Angeles Times the next day to learn that it was the name of a band. Although there were a few unauthorized changes before that, RAFFEYSOD was the first time I was aware of one.
After that, it seemed to happen every year or two, and it got kind of old hat. But I always appreciated that the pranksters achieved the changes in a reversible, non-destructive way, using tarps that can be untied rather than painting the sign or removing sections of the letters. For me, that’s what distinguishes a prank from vandalism.
