All this talk of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes reminded me of this ol’ fave:

This version still gives me chills.

Yeah, and then there is Tunic off Goo, which isn’t a cover, but it’s a heartbreaking song.

Kate Bush=pop? Surewhynot
Futureheads=punk? Surewhynot.

Pink Floyd?
Reggae?
Either way I don’t hear the PF version anymore in my head. I hear this one.

To be honest, it’s kind of hard to beat Maxwell’s cover of This Woman’s Work…

I was reminded of this today while driving as the original came up on shuffle play…
Though not sure TMBG counts as punk or punk-ish.
AFAIK they only do/did this for live shows.

I saw them do that at PointFest long long ago. The Point was a brand new modern rock station in St Louis at the time. And again the some months later when I drove with friends to Rolla Mo. to see them there.

ETA pure luck of the youtube search I got your town.

My daughter’s first concert was TMBGs! They did a family show at a downtown club, in 2008, I think it was. They did both stuff from their kid’s albums and some classics. Towards the end I helped to start a chant for “Istanbul” and then they did it!

Also, it was the same day that a tornado tore through downtown (where we were was maybe 2 or 3 miles from downtown). They actually were wrapping up their encore and were about to go, when they said that they weren’t letting anyone else leave, and they played a couple of more songs.

Best subcategory of punk-pop covers is “weird originals”, where either the original is so obscure or so unexpected that it’s startling.

The Rezillos cover Fleetwood Mac-

The original “Wild in the Streets”

Very fun thread!

Vandals kinda covering Elvis.
This one is NSFW

Tim from Radio Clash podcast https://www.radioclash.com …I play stuff like this quite frequently, done mixes of it, love genre-fuckery like this! So funny/weird/genre-mashing punk covers? This thread has my name on it! A lot of not punk tracks though - naughty!

Big Black doing Kraftwerk’s The Model anyone?

The Vandals covering Queen. CHOON!

Damned have been mentioned before, but not this Plastic Bertrand cover I think:

Pookiesnackenburger doing an advertising jingle - is that pop enough for ya?

And the reverse - Ukrainian folk covers of Sex Pistols anyone?

Also the best Iggy cover I know, oddly punk for Nada Surf, so a cover of a proto-punk artist by a non-punk artist in a punk style.

Oh and an Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain cover of Splodgenessabounds:

And metal rather than punk, but I collect ABBA covers, so:

Therion doing Summer Night City:

Helloween doing an excellent cover of Lay All Yout Love On Me:

But the Dancing Queen on that album is definitely actually punk!

Oh and it’s grunge but Hole were pretty punky even so, and Courtney is a spiritual ancestor to Stevie, so:

Also not seen Redd Kross on here?
