Some favorite punk-ish covers of pop tunes

Wow, Gang Green! I haven’t even thought about them since high school.

I always liked Coil’s version of Tainted Love.

And I think Smartbomb improved on Faith Hill.

I was quite firm in my belief that Devo’s “Satisfaction” was the most punk cover of a Stones’ song, only to learn about this! Thanks for introducing me to Laibach!

I can’t post Devo’s cover of “Satisfaction” without also posting Otis Redding’s truly superior version of that song. Though it isn’t punk, I doubt anybody (including Mick and Keith) can record a better rendition.

Honestly, I think there are many Rolling Stones songs with covers better than the original versions; the Andrew Oldham Orchestra’s take on “The Last Time” (sampled in “Bittersweet Symphony”) is sooo much better than what the Stones made:

Maybe the straightest thing they’ve ever done:

Schlong has done many great covers.

From Blondie:

To Michael Jackson:

To Pat Benetar:

And the Carpenters:

And for the coup-de-grace, the entire Rumours album (sadly, the YouTube video is missing part of the B side):

They also did a cover album of the entire West Side Story soundtrack but I can’t find it on YouTube. It’s a shame because in a very un-punk twist, it’s really well done.

That is the other way round sir. And I say this a TMBG fan who got to see Cub open for them and both bands play together for that song.

ETA and that was over 20 years ago now… fuck I am old.

Just realised that I’d had this mis-tagged as being by Cub for 20 years. Thanks, Napster.

Gameface- Time After Time

They really are one of the more interesting and controversial bands of the late 20th century. In addition to their covers, they’ve also done soundtrack work, for the movie Iron Sky, for plays, including a recent one for a stage production of Also Sprach Zarathustra, for MacBeth, a cover album for Jesus Christ Superstar, an interpretation of the Art of Fugue (Bach), and they were one of the first western bands to play in North Korea:

There was also a relatively recent album of covers of national anthems, too, Volk…

Oh, the Devo cover is still amazing, but yeah, Otis Redding is amazing…
