Maybe, just maybe, they should’ve concentrated on their business rather than going on a buying spree.

Well, actually a startup from LATAM named PedidosYa (owned by Doordash) layed off 250 persons in a 5 minutes call. No one knew the reason of the call, and it was a monologue. When finished saying “you are kaput” the CEO cut the call and the employees had the badges, access and all revoked inmediatelly. Security staff escorted the 250 persons to the street. They do not know if they are getting severance packages (here are mandatory by law).

5 apartments per employee. Seems kind of excessive.

Is the first link supposed to go to something other than a self-reference? And also I really like that website “techcranch”.

Bulk layoffs are always interesting. One of my layoffs involved people cutting telephone wires with giant gardening shears. The 90’s were fun.

On the plus side, at least all those workers didn’t have to go into the office just to learn they were getting the boot.

Buying stuff is easy, running a business is hard. Ask anyone with a craft purchasing habit.

Yeah, one of my worst workplace experiences was sitting at a desk while teams were called into the largest conference room (one after another) to be given the bad news in person. At least they didn’t get immediately escorted out by the guards and met at the curb with boxes of belongings from their desks. Those were still the days when workers got a bit of notice. :woman_shrugging:t4:

My best layoff experience was a day when I went into work and carried on, then around lunch realized that the manager was avoiding me, and the senior manager (who I had a good relationship with) would not make eye contact with me.

We were in about round 4 of layoffs at that point, so I walked into the office and asked if I was getting cut. Mumble mumble yes mumble mumble at the end of the day…

As it happened I had some marijuana in my car, so I spent the last 4 hours of that day getting blasted and visiting with all my soon-to-be former coworkers.

At the end of the day they gave me my final cheque and a company hat (!!). I pocketed the cheque and cheerfully tossed the hat into the manager’s trash can.

What I “liked” about those layoff days, was the lean and mean, gung-ho speech at the end of the day. Mostly we spent the rest of the day talking about the layoffs, the future of the company etc

I once worked for a company that laid off all the women on the same day because they realised they didn’t have enough money for maternity leave. The rest of us got a month more before we got laid off too.

I once worked for a startup that never told me I was laid off. I realized once I didn’t get my pay check.
